I Will Wake The Dawn

What are the first words out of your mouth in the morning? It isn’t natural for us to bound out of bed with a shout of praise, but what if we did set this as the tone for the day? Set your heart on God. Trust him in every situation. Speak of His goodness knowing that “Through God, we will do valiantly” as it says in Psalm 108:13. There are times when we face opposition and times when we are weak. Not every Psalm is a shout of praise, some are a lament that expresses our feelings as we pass through the challenges of life as in Psalm 109:3 (LEB) “They also surround me with words of hate, and fight me without cause”. It is in these times that we remember, and look forward to God’s promise knowing that our enemies are also His enemies in Psalm 110:1–2 (LEB) ‘A declaration of Yahweh to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”

I Will Wake the Dawn

Psalm 108:1-7

This Psalm begins with a declaration by the speaker in Psalm 108:1 “My heart is steadfast, O God” and it concludes with a declaration that “Through God we will do valiantly” in Psalm 108:13. The speaker is saying to God that right now, in the midst of whatever is going on, “My heart is steadfast” while I look forward in faith as you “tread down our enemies”. This is a forward-looking declaration and expectation that I will overcome.

This is not sung at the end of the day after the work is finished and I have time to relax before sleep. It is an early morning shout in Psalm 108:2 “I will awake the dawn”. Here there is a shout of praise at sunrise followed by a declaration of God’s goodness to all throughout the day in

Psalm 108:3 (LEB) “I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Yahweh; I will give you praise among the nations”

Then comes a reminder of the lands, the covenant, that God has promised by recounting the names of the places they are to possess in

Psalm 108:7-9 (LEB) “God has spoken in his holiness, “I will exult, I will divide up Shechem, and portion out the valley of Succoth. 8 Gilead is mine … 9 Moab … Edom … Philistia I will shout in triumph.”

And finally, there is a request for God’s help, acknowledging that it is His strength we need and not our own in

Psalm 108:12 (LEB) “Give us help against the enemy, for the help of humankind is futile.

O God of My Praise

Psalm 109:1-10

Have you ever felt surrounded by accusations, lies, evil intent against you? This is exactly the situation in this lament that calls out to God for His action in

Psalm 109:1 (LEB) “O God of my praise, do not keep silent,”

There are times when you are doing good, intending the best for all around you, and yet, you find people that oppose you as in

Psalm 109:3 (LEB) They also surround me with words of hate, and fight me without cause.

For every good, they return evil and they make it impossible for you to have a right relationship with them in

Psalm 109:5 (LEB) “So they inflicted evil against me in return for good and hatred in return for my love”.

We sometimes forget that God has told us to choose blessing or cursing. Jesus came that all could be saved but not all will be. As it says in

1 Timothy 2:3–4 (LEB) “This is good and acceptable before God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth”.

and the thing that is good is in the verse just before this, 1 Timothy 2:2b “that we may live a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity”. But there is a time of judgment even now, before the final judgment, and if they have set themselves against God and against God’s children then in

Psalm 109:7 (LEB) “When he is judged, let him come out guilty, and let his prayer become as sin”.

He Did Not Delight in Blessing

Psalm 109:11-20

Your Loyal Love is Good

Psalm 109:21-31

Yahweh Has Sworn and He Will Not Change His Mind

Psalm 108:1-7

Written by one who knew the throne of Israel and had a right relationship with God comes a declaration. But this is not just a declaration from David, but it is David speaking through the gift of prophecy, speaking by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, repeating the declaration that God himself has made about Jesus Christ, His Messiah in

Psalm 110:1–2 (LEB) ‘A declaration of Yahweh to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion; rule in the midst of your enemies’.

God himself has established this, a man, Jesus, established as a priest forever in

Psalm 110:4 (LEB) ‘Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever according to the manner of Melchizedek.” ’

and not only a priest but also king, as judge over all nations in

Psalm 110:5 (LEB) “O Lord, at your right hand he will shatter kings in the day of his anger”.

Bible 2020

The Bible 2020 Initiative

The “Bible 2020 is a global movement” to encourage “Everyone, Everywhere” to read “God’s Word aloud across the world”. Whether you are reading this on January 1, 2020, or sometime later, get connected at: https://bible2020.org/ and begin reading God’s word out loud every day.

This initiative, “Bible2020 is being pioneered by the Scottish Bible Society”, one of many bible societies that are seeking to make “the Bible available, known and loved”. They have made these daily Bible readings available by download of a pdf through any web browser at: https://bible2020.org/resources/, or by downloading the Bible 2020 app for any smartphone. From the phone app, you can record and share your reading in your language or listen to others as they read in their language.

Whether you join this initiative or not, pick up a bible, an old-fashioned bound book, a computer-based tool, or an app on your phone, and read the Bible for yourself daily. This was God’s command to the kings of Israel in Deuteronomy 17:18–19 (LEB) “And then when he is sitting on the throne of his kingdom, then he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll before the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to revere Yahweh your God by diligently observing all the word of this law and these rules” and it was the practice in the early church in Acts 5:42 (LEB) “Every day, both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that the Christ was Jesus”.

The Kingdom of God is Here

Happy New Year

At the beginning of a new year, it is natural to evaluate what happened over the last year. Have we accomplished what we had hoped? My Pastor asked, “What did you learn in 2019?” which naturally leads us to “What are my goals for 2020?”. But first, think about this. We are two decades into the twenty-first century and seventy-two years from the re-establishing of Israel as the Jewish state. If you are in your twenties and reading this, you haven’t quite recognized decades yet and Israel has always been a nation. Some of you though, are in your eighties and maybe thought the turn of the century, the year 2000, was the end of your life and yet, here you are. The point is that what we expect to happen in 2020 is only based on our experience. God has a bigger plan and as we look toward the new year, He asks us to 1 Chronicles 16:15 (KJV) “Be ye mindful always of his covenant; The word which he commanded to a thousand generations”. This covenant will unfold according to God’s timeline and we are all affected by it.

God’s plan, God’s timeline, is written in the Bible and much of it has already been accomplished. Jesus, the light of the world, has come. Jesus preached in Mark 1:15 (KJV): “And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel”. Salvation, the ability to come directly into God’s presence, is ours today yet there is coming a final day when Jesus Christ will return in glory. God doesn’t tell us when Jesus will return, he says in Mark 13:32 (KJV) “But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father”. What we do know is that there are signs for us in Matthew 24:32–33 (KJV) “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: 33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors”. He will come and we will see Him in Matthew 24:30 (KJV) “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory”.

Jesus also though, said in Matthew 24:12 (KJV) “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold”. We are in a world that seems to be spinning ever faster. Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes 1:18 (KJV) “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow”. While knowledge is increasing, there is still poverty and pollution and fear. What are we to do as the world seems to be spiraling out of control? Many Christians are setting themselves to fast and pray to hear God’s direction for the coming year. And, before he began his work, Jesus was led by the spirit to fast. During this time, Jesus passed by every offer that would require him to bow down and serve the devil. After this, Jesus announced to the world in Luke 4:18–19 (KJV) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel … 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord”.

Jesus then went on to demonstrate the power and will of God in Acts 10:38 (KJV) “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him”. Crowds of people followed after him Matthew 14:14 (KJV) “And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick”. The crowds increased, and Luke 9:1–2 (KJV) “Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority … 2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick” and then in Luke 10:1–2 (KJV) “After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them … 2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest”.

And how much more important is this as we have become a post-Christian society that looks ahead to a world without God. So, hear what the will of God is for 2020 in Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV) “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you … to give you an expected end”. God’s plan is based on the power of the Holy Spirit so Isaiah 60:1–2 (KJV) Arise, shine; … 2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And gross darkness the people: But the Lord shall arise upon thee”. This is the time to declare the works of the Lord. Today is the day of someone’s salvation. This year, Hebrews 3:13 (KJV) “exhort one another daily”, be living examples, stand with us and 2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV) “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” because Psalm 118:24 (KJV) “This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it”.

Joy to The World

Merry Christmas

Christmas day is the time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Yet, mention of the name of Jesus has become politically incorrect and what once was an important Christmas eve church service fololwed by a close family gathering has become a simple passing statement “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” or maybe just a “Happy Holidays” wish. There hasn’t though, been any less emphasis on Christmas, the focus has simply shifted. I noticed it when I heard this phrase, “Joy to the World!”, as the introductory jingle for a car commercial. Then, I saw it again as part of the over-sized decorations in a restaurant. Christmas trees and ornaments are up and the Black Friday sales are behind us. And, with Chritmas day here, the year-end advertising blitz is nearly over. This is the time when we have asked ourselves, what gifts can we give to our loved ones? And what gifts can we give to ourselves? After all, you have been nice, haven’t you? Go ahead and reward yourself, isn’t that what the holiday season is all about? You deserve it!’ Or, at least that’s what the advertisers have said Isn’t this why you work hard all year, so you can enjoy the holidays? But haven’t you been down this road before, where you spend too much, indulge too much, eat too much? Then January rolls around and the bills come due as the mirror shows the added pounds and the frenzied attempt to find fulfillment in things has failed. Christmas wasn’t meant for our self-indulgence, it is the day we celebrate the coming of our Lord.

This is the time to “Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples” (Psalm 96:3). This is the time for us to tell what the angel spoke to Mary: “thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:31-33). Mary responded by saying, “My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:46-47). This was the beginning, and is the real reason for Christmas. But Mary wasn’t the only one that heard this message from God. There is a song we sing that commemorates some of these visitations and it asks:

Do you see what I see? Wise men from East of Jerusalem had studied prophecy and were expecting the birth of a king to rule Israel and as they saw a star appear, they journeyed, “Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him” (Matthew 2:2). No one in Israel understood, but these men followed the star and “When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh” (Matthew 2:10-11). They didn’t bring gifts to give to each other, they brought their best to the Lord.

Do you hear what I hear? Shepherds were in the field tending their flock when an angel appeared “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11). As the angel finished his announcement, the heavens opened “And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, Good will toward men” (Luke 2:13-14). This was the original outcry of “Joy to the world” that came as Jesus was born.

Do you know what I know? God sent Jesus Christ into the world that we could be saved and most people have heard this message “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16-17). Jesus went around doing good and healing, demonstrating the heart of God for his people. Jesus lived, and gave his life for our sin, and rose from the dead. Now he sits at the right hand of the Father. Because of this, we have already received the greatest gift of all through Jesus Christ: forgiveness and eternal life with God. It says in John 17:3 “this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”.

Remember today, remember this Chrstmas, to lift your heart and lift your voice as it says in Psalm 95:1-3 “O come, let us sing unto the Lord: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, And make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, And a great King above all gods”.

Prayer to Invite the Holy Spirit Day 10

The theme for day ten is “shake and bake” from Acts 28:1-10. God wants us to complete what we begin for him. What Good is it if we begin the race, and cannot finish the course? You can be sure of this one thing, as you begin to light revival fire by praying through the book of acts, the vipers of the enemy will come out to strike you and even stop you. Satan hates the supernatural works of Jesus in the church. He will lash out with lies, distractive gossip and opinions of men in order to poison minds and cause strife.

So how did the apostles handle these attacks of the enemy? Notice in

Acts 28:3–5 And when Paul had gathered a large number of sticks and was placing them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand. 4 And when the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, “Doubtless this man is a murderer whom, although he was rescued from the sea, Justice has not permitted to live!” 5 He, in turn, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.

The natives, recognizing the snake is poisonous, expected Paul to die. But to their surprise, Paul shook the Viper into the fire and was unharmed. As you pray through Acts 28, pray for steadfastness according to Paul’s example:

  1. He ignored the Viper. He did not talk about it or seek sympathy from others. He gave it no undo attention. If the devil cannot stop you, at least wants your attention and he will go to any extreme to get you to focus on the vipers. Instead of giving into his schemes, enter into a time of praise. Praise God for past victories, for his promises, and for the armor of God in Ephesians 6.
  2. Paul shook the Viper off. Do something to shake off your attack. Pray that the church as a whole will learn how to overcome the evil one together. Call a special prayer vigil, sow (giveaway) a book or video on spiritual warfare, enlist some to pray and fast for a season. Learn what others are doing to shake off attacks and copy their strategy.
  3. Since the fire represents the Holy Spirit after you shake, you need to “bake”. Put the Viper in the fire, submitting it under the authority of the name of Jesus. Pray for discernment about the spiritual nature of the onslaught and petition God for wisdom and strategy. The Holy Spirit is a good helper and counselor. When the enemy comes in like a flood, rise and seek the Spirit’s guidance. He has the answer to every scheme of the devil because he has seen them all. He will tell you what to do and what not to do. You instruct you and guide you. He will also tell you when to simply rest.
  4. Paul continued to minister right after the attack. He prayed for the publican’s father who was healed and this open the door for others to come and be cured. The enemy sent a snake to stop Paul, but he shook it off and ended up praying for the sick on the island. What began as an assignment of death was turned into an instrument of revival. Ask God for this kind of wisdom and maturity to enable you to divert the devil’s plans and use them to further the gospel. Imagine what kind of opportunities might be created if we could learn how to use the vipers as catalysts for revival instead of allowing them to make us retreat in the bunkers of self-preservation.

Paul knew about riots, mobs, false accusations, deceitful brothers, stoning’s, Lions, and other dangers. The enemy threw everything at Paul to stop him, but eventually, he would write in

2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have completed the race, I have kept the faith.

Would that we could finish our course and not give up!

Watch in a discerning manner for any surprise assaults from the enemy. Trust God for the victory no matter what you may hear or feel. Remember the battle is the Lords and the victory is yours in him.

Prayer to Invite the Holy Spirit Day 9

The theme for day nine is worship evangelism from Acts 16:16-37. God has extended himself to us and desires nothing more than that we respond whether that is as individuals, where two or three are gathered together, or corporately as a congregation. In fact, we are to be His dwelling place in

Ephesians 2:19–22 Consequently, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are built up together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

As we turn our hearts toward Him in worship the Holy Spirit moves among us and works to open the hearts of those that might receive Jesus. People may receive a word of knowledge or wisdom or healing, but somehow, they will receive a special touch from God. As we recognize God for who He is and give thanks as in

Psalm 100:3–4 Know that Yahweh, he is God; he made us and we are his. We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise. Give thanks to him; bless his name.

And, as we enter God’s throne room, God extends mercy and we find grace as in

Hebrews 4:16 Therefore let us approach with confidence to the throne of grace, in order that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Acts 16 is a testimony of the power of worship as in

Acts 16:25 Now about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

After being beaten, locked in the deepest part of the prison, with no instruments, no lights, and no worship leader Paul and Silas turned the prison into a place of worship as they, two prisoners, began singing and praising God. As they did, something happened. We who are Christians understand what happened, the presence of God came in. Paul and Silas were no longer bound and in the dark but entered the realm of the Spirit where God is (see Revelation 1:9-18, Revelation 4:1-11) then in

Acts 16:26 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened and all the bonds were unfastened.

Suddenly, everyone was awake and the jailer feared for his life because the prisoners might escape so in

Acts 16:29–31 And demanding lights, he rushed in and, beginning to tremble, fell down at the feet of Paul and Silas. 30 And he brought them outside and said, “Sirs, what must I do so that I can be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household!”

The jailer was witness to the power and presence of God and immediately responded “Sirs, what must I do so that I can be saved?” and he and his whole household accepted Jesus Christ as their savior that night. We could call this worship evangelism because there was no preaching, no teaching, no invitation, simply two beaten and bruised prisoners lifting up songs of praise to the Lord. It was the adoration of God by his children that creates a holy presence. The act of worship by Paul and Silas invited the presence of God into that place and the power of God did what words could not. Worship has the same impact today.

Take time to worship God yourself. Pray for a heart of worship in your local congregation. Recognize corporate worship as the catalyst for unity as you are agreeing and seeking a powerful move of the Holy Spirit as the presence of God enters in. Expect the power of the presence to work in the hearts and lives of those around you in ways you cannot explain with words.

Take this example with you to church services and intercede for the time of worship asking the Holy Spirit to reveal the presence of God. Ask the Lord to direct your worship leaders to be sensitive to how the spirit might be working in the lives of people. Pray for hearts to be stirred and captives to be released. Expect physical and emotional healing as unseen bonds fall from people throughout the congregation. Ask God to cause people to be saved through worship just as he did with the jailer in Acts 16.

Expect high praise in your congregation as you lift your voices to God together. Pray for biblical worship using examples of other great scenes of warship in the Bible like David’s adoration in 1 Chronicles 29:10–13 or 2 Chronicles 20:1-30.

Rebuke the spirit of entertainment and the religious spirit of the dead routines of the liturgy. Bind all the spirits of doubt and apathy and deception that want to hinder the entrance of the glory of God. Claim in Jesus’ name, a hunger for God and uninhibited expression of love for God.

Yours, O Yahweh, is the kingdom and exaltation over all as head! 12 And wealth and glory are from you, and you rule over all. And in your hand is power and might.
